Sony Keynote Presentation – E3 2011

Starting now…

…maybe.  They’re 3 minutes late on the feed.  May be an IGN thing.  At least the music is pretty cool.  But, I’m getting tired of staring at the word PlayStation…  And, we’re waiting some more…

Just got a spiffy test pattern and sine wave signal to match for just a moment there and then back to white PlayStation name on blue streaks background.  Ah!  Here we go…

…Or not.  Good lord.  I have to say, this is not giving me a warm or fuzzy feeling.  Sony and the E3 crew had at least an hour since Ubisoft concluded their press conference.

WTF.  IGN just dropped in with a Sony pre-show thing outside the building; I guess they’re now officially stalling for time.  We’re 7 minutes into their time slot!  If I have to hear that this is all because of a frigging hack on Sony, I may have to start hating on hackers.  Just sayin’…

We at least now know that InFamous 2 will be released on Tuesday, June 7th.

Hmmm.  At 16 minutes past the hour, the stage at least looks ready.  And now we’re finally running.

Okay…  So, they already did some nice moving panorama shots of the PSP 2.  but, I’m a little worried about the fact that in their game montage they they included Captain America, Green Lantern and Cars 2 game footage.  I’d expect more A-list games and exclusive titles.

They just brought Jack Tretton to the stage.  He’s remarkably nervous.  And he’s opening with the PSN outage.  Made a decent joke on it, telling the press they’re welcome for providing them with scandals.  He’s moved forward to express gratitude to companies that have carried their products in stores.  He’s now moved on to apologize to the Sony consumer public.  This may be a long 90 minutes…

They will put a large collection of PS3s on the display floor after the show.  Mr. Tretton is up-selling how PSN is a free service.  He’s noting how a survey found more people use Netflix on PS3s than on other platforms.

They’ve quickly moved on to Naughty Dog Games, makers of Uncharted 3, briefly arguing that it could only have been possible on the PS3.  It definitely looks good.  A lot of neck snapping in the demo.  Vid appears to be either a lot of quicktime moments or it’s a mix of game play and rendering engine cinematics.  There is a character in it that sounds a lot like Helen Mirren. Just announced a special with Subway restaurants to do with online gaming; more from them on it closer to September.  Game beta starts June 28th.

Moving to Insomniac Games (Resistance 3).  Resistance 3 will run in 3D.  Even in 2D, the game looks considerably more evolved than Resistance 1 or 2.

Jumped straight to God of War: Origins, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus all coming in 3D.  Also mentioned Ratchet and Klank as being 3D capable.

They  just unveiled a 27″ 3D TV branded with Playstation name.  TV screen can emit 2 separate full-screen 3D images—for two different viewers—at the same time!!  No need to split-screen your coop games!

Incidentally, Mr. Tretton is looking more comfortable, now.

2K Sports coming on now.  NBA 2012 has new feature, NBA OnTheMove.  Essentially, it cleans up passing mechanism.  Definitely smoother.  They managed to get Kobe Bryant to show up for the event.  Heheheh.  He got intercepted in the demo game.  After a bit of banter, they’re off to discussing the game versus the real thing.  Kobe says the triangle defense in the game is better than his team did last year.

On to Kush Games.  Sony Move title called Medieval Moves: Dead Man’s Quest.  A somewhat cartoonish looking adventure game.  No inventory system needed.  Sony Move translates your gestures to necessary weapon changes.  Relatively 1:1 action on the game.  Puzzle solving integrated into the game along with dungeon crawling.

Ran full trailer for InFamous 2.  Looks good.  But, no live gameplay.  Later this fall, they’re enabling custom mission creation.

Little Big Planet 2 will get level creation (sometime in September)

Lightbox Interactive.  Starhawk trailer (Warhawk revamp).  Still looks good.  Nothing new here, though.

Just ran a beautiful teaser for new Sly Cooper title.  Looked funny as hell.

Next up: CCP.  Dust 514, a “persistent shooter”.  Cross-connects to Eve Online!  PSN exclusive!  Looks very smooth and polished.  The game is intended to serve as a ground campaign mechanism to more thoroughly complete the story and gaming experience of Eve.

Irrational Games’ Bioshock Infinite trailer.  100% gameplay trailer.  It’s remarkable looking.  It looks like they took a page each from Fallout and Borderlands and smoothed it all up.  Playstation Move integrated.  Irrational’s CEO hinted at a Bioshock title coming to the new PSP2 as well.  PS3 only deal: Bioshock Infinite will include Bioshock 1 on the BluRay disc.

Moved straight to Saints Row 2.  Nothing new to reveal here.  Likely holding out for the live presentation later this week.

Star Trek coop game for 2012, coinciding with next JJ Abrams movie.  Playstation Move enabled and 3D capable.  Custom phasor-shaped controller on the way, as well.

EA PlayStation exclusives.  SSX level: Snowboarding race down Mt. Fuji.  Need for Speed: 7 additional supercars, including the Bugatti Veyron.  Battlefield 3: adds Battlefield 1943.

Finally onto PlayStation Portable 2—officially named PlayStation Vita (PSV?).  Bringing on Kazuo Hirai (he is remarkably articulate). Opens by reminding us their 10 year plan for integrated entertainment (announced 6 years ago).  Indicates they learned about the trust and loyalty of their fans, owing to the PSN outage.  Introducing PlayStation Suite; PlayStation games will run on select PlayStation Suite certified Android platforms..(?)  They didn’t specify phones. Presumably, this is in reference to Sony-Ericsson phones gaining PSP functionality; however, I didn’t know they were switching to Android.  PSV will have OLED screen, rear touch-pad, full 5.1 inch touchscreen, six-axis, wi-fi, and front and rear facing cameras.  No word on CPU, RAM or hard drive specs.  Crowd started to turn on Kaz when he said the PSV will be partnered exclusively with AT&T for 3G connectivity…  ”PlayStation Party”, a new social page, has an interface that looks like a fruity colored version of the Wii.

Worldwide Studios America on now.  Early developer for PlayStation Vita.  Showing a new Uncharted title coming for the PSV; has dynamic lighting and water shaders, among other good things.  Looks really damn good!  Tap and swipe the screen for melee attack!  Used six-axis to direct your ledge jumps.  Can use screen touches or sticks to move characters.  Used screen tap to jump out of cover and take a target down..!  Tap weapon icons to pick-up or reload.

Idle Minds representative up next to show off PSV title, Ruin.  Combat action looks a lot like Bayonetta, especially for smoothness.  Social networking enabled game.  Other players can connect to your game.  They may be a rival or an ally.  Rivals establish lairs.  Lairs scale in level with the player.  Note: you could have your lair get jacked up while you’re at work, in the bathroom or on a date.  So, they recommend you keep the game with you at all times.  Also connects to the PS3 for further continuation of the phasing out of your outdoor life.  LOL!

Next up, ModNation Racers.  Mario Kart has very serious competition, here.  Use touchscreen to draw out your own custom race map.  Map editor for further modding.  Uses the rear touch panel to raise and lower the terrain!  Use front touch screen to rub in a lake and even add trees and the lot.  All adjustments were visible in the 3rd person race.

Little Big Planet 2 got brief mention.  Expect more info later this week.  They did indicate it will support cloud services and integrate with PS3.

Street Fighter X Tekken (the X is pronounced as “cross”).  Yoshinori Ono from Capcom onstage.  Surprise reveal that they have chosen to make a PSV version of the title—and Cole from Infamous will be in it!  Showing realtime footage.  You can do tag team like MK 9!  The game looks like an XBox 360 title, but running on PSV!

Now running final PSV montage ad.

PLAYSTATION VITA PRICES: $249 base Wi-Fi model.  $299 Wi-Fi + 3G model.
